People living in the Strabane and Lifford areas are being encouraged to have their say on a major cross border development planned for the region, by taking part in an important online survey.

Derry City and Strabane District Council in partnership with Donegal County Council are hoping to drive forward plans on the 'Riverine Project', which seeks to create a significant new cross border community asset for the area.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, said public feedback would greatly assist in leveraging the required funding to progress to the next phase of the project.

“The Riverine Project is an exciting proposal for both council areas, potentially providing an entire new community infrastructure which can be shared by all those living in close proximity to the border. The project offers the opportunity to completely transform the area and enhance its profile as an attractive visitor destination.

“By going online people can highlight the priorities of those living and working in the area, and show their support for the project. This support will underscore the need for such a cross-border facility and strengthen the case for further significant investment and development of the project.”

The proposed Riverine concept plans comprise 47 acres covering two currently unused open natural spaces, including a partially covered outdoor public events space, community building and a world class play experience, radiating out into shared parkland featuring walkways, river access and parking.  .

If taken to the next stage the area will also benefit from greatly enhanced infrastructure with a new cross-border greenway network connecting Lifford and Strabane as well as a cross border pedestrian bridge linking the towns. The space will span either side of the banks of the River Foyle in Lifford and Strabane which will be interconnected by a community footbridge.

Both local Councils have now jointly submitted a Stage I application under the Peace IV Shared Space and Services Programme following a jointly managed community consultation which helped shape the ambitious new vision for the area. This stage I application has recently been successful, with the project now going through to a more detailed second stage assessment. The results of the survey will be an important consideration within the context of the second stage assessment by the funder. It is important to note that the project is currently at concept stage and its delivery is subject to successfully securing all of the necessary funding.

Within this highly competitive process, it is essential to demonstrate significant local demand for the project from the people of Strabane, Lifford and the surrounding areas and the public are once again asked to show their support by completing the survey which is now available online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WPNVFMX
